The Best Job I've Ever Had
An insight into the role of a cosmetic Surgery Nurse Counsellor
You may be surprised to know that the Cosmetic Surgery industry is worth a whopping £350 million in the UK alone and is recognised as being the fastest and probably most dynamic healthcare growth segment. To find out more about this we asked Laura Marshall RGN, Manchester Nurse Counsellor with The Harley Medical Group to tell us more about her role.
I have been with The Harley Medical Group for over four years now and can honestly say it's the best job I've ever had! No two days are ever the same in the job I do. It’s so varied and you get to meet so many interesting and lovely new people everyday. I am now the manager of our Manchester team, having started out as a treatment nurse in our Chester clinic. The team I work with is great, everyone is really friendly and happy in their work, we all get on well together and there is a real sense of teamwork.
The Harley Medical Group is an established Cosmetic Surgery provider with 31 clinics in the UK and Ireland. We have an excellent reputation and are recognised for the highest standards of quality and patient care. First and foremost I am a Nurse, and so it is extremely important to me that I know I am representing a company who will provide the best possible treatment and care for the patients I see.
My appointments are all pre booked by our fantastic Central Reservations Department, this is great as it allows you to plan ahead and have an organised day.
A typical day for me will consist of providing patients with an initial consultation, this is for people who have enquired about Cosmetic Surgery or any of the wide range of Non Surgical treatments that we offer in our clinics. All of these patients will have been thinking of having some form of Cosmetic Surgery, usually for many years and are really looking forward to finding out about suitable operations or treatments. This is one of the best parts of my job - during the consultation I get to know people really well and my heart goes out to them as they tell me things about themselves, often things that they have never discussed with anyone else. At the end of their consultation I know that we will have a solution that's right for them, providing that they are fit and healthy and have realistic expectations.
The great thing about working here is that you get to see all aspects of a patients care. From start to finish you are part of that patient’s journey and travel through it with them, spanning from the first time they arrive at the clinic, to chaperoning their surgeon consultation and to my favorite part the post operative appointments. This is the best appointment and it is such a lovely feeling to part of the life changing decision that a patient makes.
When I joined the company I underwent a 2 month intensive training course to learn all about every aspect of Cosmetic Surgery - I found it fascinating then and I still do! The Harley Medical Group has a fantastic training department, which is great as it means that I am continuously developing in my role and learning new things about aesthetics.
I am specially trained in all the Non Surgical treatments that we offer, so will also spend part of day performing treatments. This ranges from dermal fillers for lip enhancement, to sclerotherapy for thread vein removal to the legs, to laser hair removal on a patient’s bikini line, to stretch mark removal on a patient’s abdomen. This is a part of the job that I love. It’s so rewarding to see the differences that these treatments can make to a patient’s confidence.
