Electrolysis Hair Removal
Although far less effective than laser hair removal, electrolysis is still a fairly commonly used procedure that aims to remove unwanted hair - though it does require a much greater commitment and can work out much more expensive over a course of treatments in comparison to more modern methods, such as laser hair removal.
Electrolysis hair removal is medically approved by the FDA and can remove unwanted hairs from any area of the body. The treatment used to be particularly popular for men and women who wanted to permanently remove facial hair, which cannot be easily hidden under clothing like other undesired body hair.
How electrolysis hair removal works
During electrolysis, surgeons use an electrode or probe to apply electric current to each individual hair follicle being treated. This current destroys the root of the hair, preventing further growth.
Because electrolysis targets hairs individually, it can be a more painful and time-consuming procedure than other hair removal treatments, such as laser hair removal. Each follicle needs to be treated for around one minute before the surgeon moves to the next.
Because hairs grow at different rates it’s necessary to book a course of treatments to complete an electrolysis procedure, and you will typically need between 15 and 30 treatments to achieve long-lasting hair removal. This makes electrolysis a less favourable option if you're looking for a faster and less painful method of removing unwanted hairs.
Alternatives to electrolysis
Electrolysis is not guaranteed to provide permanent hair removal for everyone, but can remove hair for long periods of time, as well as reduce future growth. If you're looking for a more convenient treatment, however, laser hair removal may be the preferable option.
