Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty)
Pregnancy and quick or substantial weight loss can cause the skin of the abdominal area to become loose and the muscles in that area to become weak. For some people, these issues can be difficult or impossible to resolve with exercise and dieting alone, and can lead to individuals becoming self-conscious and suffering from low self-esteem.
Tummy tuck surgery, or abdominoplasty, is offered as a solution to these problems and involves the tightening of affected muscles and skin to create a firmer and flatter stomach. Tummy tuck surgery has increased in popularity over the years and many of our patients combine the procedure with liposuction, also known as fat removal surgery, to achieve a slimmer waistline.
The procedure for tummy tuck surgery
The tummy tuck procedure or abdominoplasty, is performed under general anaesthetic, and requires an overnight stay in hospital. The procedure usually takes approximately two hours, during which the cosmetic surgeon will make an incision across the base of the abdomen, from hip to hip, and remove all excess skin and fatty tissue. If necessary, your surgeon will also tighten the muscles that make up the abdominal wall, using permanent sutures, ensuring that you are left with a firmer and flatter tummy.
Recovery from tummy tuck surgery
After tummy tuck surgery is performed, you will be required to rest for at least two weeks and to wear a post-surgery support garment. Once these 14 days are up, you will be advised on the sort of exercises you should be doing in order to tone and strengthen your newly tightened abdominal muscles, and to speed up your recovery process. At this time you should also be fit to return to work, but this is dependent on the type of work that you do. Your surgeon will be able to advise you on the best course of action in your particular case.
