Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction for MenLiposuction, also known as fat removal, refers to the cosmetic surgery procedure to remove excess fatty tissue from particular areas of the body in order to reshape the figure. Despite being called fat removal surgery, it is absolutely not designed to be a quick fix for obesity, and is instead carried out to target specific problem areas, to sculpt and define their shape.

The most common areas of the body that men wish to target with liposuction are stomachs and chest (‘man boobs’ or gynaecomastia), and cosmetic surgeons at our Dublin clinic are experienced in performing this type of surgery.

The facts

  • Liposuction is an effective treatment for areas that are prone to the build-up of excess fatty tissue that is extremely difficult or impossible to get rid of through exercise and healthy eating alone.
  • Liposuction is used in male chest reduction surgery.
  • Fat removal for men is not suitable for very overweight patients and your BMI (Body Mass Index) measurement will help our nurses to assess your suitability for the procedure.
  • Liposuction surgery is the fastest growing procedure for men, with 25 per cent of all operations performed on men.
  • Our cosmetic surgeons commonly perform fat removal for men on the abdomen, the flanks (or ‘love handles’), chest (or ‘man boobs’), and double chin.
  • Recovery times are usually as short as two weeks.

The procedure for liposuction

  • Liposuction, also known as fat removal or lipo surgery, is performed under either local or general anaesthetic, depending on the areas being treated, and usually takes between one and two hours to complete.
  • If the procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, you will usually be treated as a day case, otherwise you may need to remain in hospital overnight.
  • Your surgeon will make a small incision into the area being treated, before inserting a very thin plastic tube, known as a cannula, into the area. The other end of the cannula is attached to a high-pressure vacuum device which sucks the required amount of fat from the area. The cannula is then removed before the surgeon closes the incision with a dissolvable suture or stitch.

What to Expect from Liposuction

  • There will be localised swelling and bruising after liposuction surgery has been performed
  • You will not therefore be able to see the full effects of the procedure for approximately six weeks, once the swelling and bruising subsides.
  • Because the incisions made are so small, any scarring will be minimal and should fade quickly.

Recovery of Liposuction (Fat Removal)

  • Recovery from fat removal for men usually takes between two and six weeks depending on the area being treated and the extent of the surgery.
  • Recovery from the treatment for man boobs, for example, will usually take one to two weeks, while recovery from abdominal liposuction could take up to six weeks.
  • You will be required to take approximately one week off work, and to wear a supportive garment around the treated area, for the full length of your recovery time.
